In school I was taught to paint things as I saw them. But it seems so stupid!
If one could only reproduce nature, and always with less beauty than the original,
why paint at all?

Nothing is less real than realism. Details are confusing. It's only by selection,
by elimination, by emphasis that we get at the real meaning of things.
